The board year begins on September 1, 2017 and ends on August 31, 2018.

Dear SMPS Central Floridians,

This time last year I found myself tasked with making a challenging decision. I was asked to apply for the director of programs for SMPS, and frankly, I was scared out of my mind to say yes. My SMPS participation included attending a few events and programs here and there, and I was comfortable being on the fringe without any real responsibility. Now all of the sudden I was being asked to throw myself into the mix. “Do I have enough time to commit myself to the role? I’m already committed to my 1 and a (very bossy) 3-year-old,” I thought to myself. “Am I qualified enough? Why do they think I am the right person?” If worrying is like a rocking chair, I broke the thing.

A year later, I can tell you that accepting the role of director of programs was the best decision I could have made. And if you know me – you know I tell it like it is. I’ve been commended by my boss for my willingness to challenge myself, have earned more respect from my coworkers, and have made a solid case for a raise. Now not only can I manage my team (who get paid to work here...), I can manage a group of individuals who have no loyalty to me whatsoever (shout out to the programs committee). The decision I toiled over for weeks now looks like a blip on the radar.

I bring this up, because (obviously) we have a call for nominations out currently for our chapter – and, well, I am the president-elect and I want you to be a part of the success of our organization.

Recently I attended the SMPS Sunbuilt Conference in Amelia Island, and the session that hit home the most for me was put on by Adam Kilbourne and titled, “Time vs. Priority: You Have More Time Than You Think!” What I thought would be a session to teach me a few small tips and tricks (I can make time for yoga in the morning!), has turned my world upside down with one simple phrase:

“Busy isn’t a sign of success, it’s a lack of priority.”

Wow. Gut check.

The fact of the matter is, we can make time for anything we CHOOSE to make time for. My day can be wall to wall meetings, but if I get a phone call from my mom in the middle of the day (why mom do you do this to me?!) you better believe I will make time to answer it. Small example of a choice, and our lives are of full of choices.

So, I encourage you, make it YOUR priority to better yourself and your career. Choose to take action in your life and find your place in SMPS. Call me (I love to talk), and I’ll tell you what goes on in each committee and the level of commitment. Reach beyond what you think you can do, and prioritize what is important to you. I look forward to reading and accepting your nomination forms. And remember…

“Busy people talk about how they’re ‘too busy’, productive people make time for what’s important.”

My best to you,
Rachael Frohardt, SMPS Central Florida President-Elect
